McCarthy Building Companies, Inc.
and Merrick & Company
have entered into a design-build partnership agreement with UT-Battelle, LLC to deliver ongoing construction projects at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory

The exclusive multi-year Basic Ordering Agreement (BOA) is expected to include the renovation of existing facilities as well as the construction of new office, laboratory and industrial space. It may also include the construction of new or upgraded utility infrastructure, such as electrical power distribution, potable and process water systems, sanitary and storm sewer systems, and telecommunications systems. The total value of the program, including option years, is $49 million.
“We’re excited to partner with ORNL to deliver efficiency and value through our ongoing commitment to quality, safety and the use of progressive construction technologies,” said McCarthy Project Director Ryan Molen.
Previous projects completed by McCarthy at ORNL include the Maximum Building Energy Efficiency Research Laboratory (MAXLAB), the Chemical & Material Sciences Building, and parking garage and utilities projects.
Merrick’s lead Project Architect, from the firm’s Oak Ridge office, adds, “The work being done at ORNL by UT-Battelle is critical to the nation, and Merrick is pleased to continue our A-E work at the lab in partnership with McCarthy in the provision of progressive project delivery methods for general plant projects.”
Previous work by Merrick at ORNL includes providing the design of the Target Maintenance Hot Cell for the Spallation Neutron Source project, High Flux Isotope Reactor Fuel Pool Tool qualification, a current A-E BOA contract and participation in the design of proposed U-233 treatment and packaging systems.
