Fuels & Energy

Merrick & Company is one of the world’s leading biofuels engineering companies. Its Fuels & Energy Renewable Team specializes in providing cutting-edge solutions to the technical challenges facing fuels and energy companies including operating on the cutting edge of cellulosic ethanol, biochemical and biofuels technology development. The firm’s clients include industry leaders in both thermochemical and biochemical ethanol production companies and facilities, an industry leading algae-to-biofuel research and development firm, and a firm focused on bio-butanol production. Merrick’s focus and expertise is in developing biofuels technologies from lab scale through pilot testing and commercial demonstration.

Merrick is engaged by the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to evaluate and recommend equipment and systems for the rheological mixing of enzymes into high solids concentration biomass slurries. The focus of this study was the optimization of enzymatic hydrolysis of corn stover cellulose to sugar. Merrick retains unsurpassed expertise in this and many other areas of cellulosic biofuels production.

Merrick is also serving as the design engineer for NREL’s new integrated biorefinery research facility. This facility will include state-of-the-art equipment for researching cellulosic ethanol production. Being chosen by the U.S.’ premier biofuels research and development laboratory to lead the engineering design of its showcase facility sets Merrick’s capabilities at the top in this quickly evolving industry.

As well as being a leader in the biofuels engineering industry Merrick also is involved in the renewable industries of wind, solar, energy transmission and distribution. With the demand for photovoltaic and concentrated solar installations on the rise and the goal by the U.S. Department of Energy by 2030 of 20% electricity supply coming from wind energy, Merrick will continue to focus on renewable energy.
