Delivering Flood Protection With Community Value

The Montclair Drainage Basin—Denver’s largest—had long been vulnerable to flooding due to undersized stormwater infrastructure and the absence of a surface drainage channel. Even moderate storm events caused widespread impacts to homes, businesses, rail lines, and major transportation corridors, including I‑70. In this fully developed urban area, traditional open-channel solutions were not feasible, requiring a new approach to safely convey major storm flows to the South Platte River while also improving public space.

Merrick served as prime designer for the Globeville Landing Outfall, a large underground stormwater system paired with a more natural outfall through Globeville Landing Park. The work required navigating extreme site constraints, including railroad corridors, active roadways, private property, and construction through an existing landfill and Superfund site. Merrick integrated specialty environmental protections, water quality features, and permitting support while coordinating closely with the City of Denver, partner agencies, and utilities.

The project also enabled a complete renovation of Globeville Landing Park. What was once aging infrastructure is now a safer, more accessible riverfront destination that supports recreation, improves water quality, and serves as a community gathering place—while quietly delivering critical flood protection beneath the surface.
