Subsurface Utility Engineering
Know What’s Below Before You Break Ground
Every site has a hidden history in its water mains, gas lines, fiber optic cables, storm drains, electrical conduits, and more. Some are well documented, but many are not. That’s why Merrick takes a proactive approach to Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE): we uncover what’s really underground before design decisions are finalized. By doing this early, we help clients avoid costly surprises, reduce change orders, and keep projects on schedule and within budget.
Our investigation happens before and during the design phase, not after. This means fewer delays, fewer unexpected conflicts, and fewer moments where someone is standing over an unmarked utility wondering what to do next. With Merrick, you get clarity upfront, so construction can move forward with confidence.
We follow four established quality levels, each building on the last:
- Level D: Records research and 811 utility call-ins to establish what’s documented
- Level C: Survey of visible surface features like manholes, valve covers, and meters
- Level B: Electromagnetic locators and ground-penetrating radar to mark horizontal positions on the ground
- Level A: Vacuum excavation at critical points to verify depth, material, and condition
Not every project needs every level, so we tailor each investigation to your specific requirements, whether that means a full picture of the site or targeted confirmation at a key crossing.
Safety is non-negotiable. Our crews conduct tailgate safety meetings before every shift, set up traffic control and emergency lighting near roadways, and maintain clear communication throughout. When the investigation is complete, you’ll have accurate documentation that keeps design on track and prevents costly surprises during construction.
Our services include:
- Utility locations with type, size, and flow direction (where determinable)
- Depth measurements and sizes at Level A test holes
- Utility ownership documentation
- Research records, field sketches, and site photos
- As-built drawings
- Utility maps and 811 tickets
- Test hole documentation (photo, sketch, size, etc.) for SUE staff reports and plan sets
- Underground vault mapping
- System mapping (sanitary and storm sewer, water)
