Batch Process Simulation Tools for Bioprocessing

05.11.22

By Cindy Hoppe, PE, Senior Process Engineer

Mass and energy balances (MEB) are a fundamental process design deliverable required to specify any commercial process. For many bioprocessing technologies that employ batch processing operations, like fermentation, a more comprehensive process engineering analysis is needed than for similar continuous operations. The overall MEBs must be coupled with the batch schedule to develop an accurate Total Installed Cost (TIC) estimate for these projects. Process simulation modeling platforms can be used to expedite the development of MEBs and cost estimates for early-stage bioprocessing design projects.
